Q: My 13 year old son was diagnosed with bipolar disorder 2 years ago and he is really struggling in school. Should I tell the school about his diagnosis?

A: I would strongly encourage you to consider disclosing your son's situation to the school. Children with emotional disturbances often need adjustments made to their academic plan to assist them in succeeding in school. For the school to help they need to know all the pieces of the puzzle. In many cases ,children with bipolar disorder will qualify for special education services. Many adjustments can be made even without your child needing to be qualify for special education services. In addition, as of July 1, 2005, the reauthorized federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act, will allow 15% of special education funds to be used for children "at risk" so additional opportunities will exist for your son to receive additional assistance.
