Services for Families

Stepping Stones provides services and support to families who have children in school with emotional disturbances. Although educators generally want to help these children, they do not always understand the causes of their poor grades or their behavioral problems. We help families so that they can communicate and work more effectively within the school system for the benefit of their child.

Our services include:

ADVOCACY

  • Support, direction, and advocacy at school meetings
  • Step by step guidance on advocating for your child.

COACHING

  • Support and education through the journey of securing the essential components for academic success
  • Coaching through the creation of a paper trail.

EVALUATIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Evaluation of the child's needs.
  • Identification of the necessary supports so that the child can succeed in school.
  • Evaluation of the current educational placement and support strategies with recommendations for alterations in the plan as indicated.

EDUCATION

  • Education to your child's school team to help them learn about your child's problems, diagnoses, and needed supports.

REFERRALS

  • Referrals to school systems, special programs, alternative schools, psychiatrists, psychologists and others.

Phone consultations are available for immediate guidance.

GETTING STARTED

Here's how Susan Mikolic, R.N. and President, can begin to work with you:

  1. Send Susan Mikolic an email or call her to explain the problem that you are experiencing with your child or someone you know.
  2. Susan will then determine if she is able to assist you with your specific problem before beginning any work with you.
  3. If so, a brief agreement of the terms of working together would be sent to you covering:
    • The scope of work
    • Fees
    • Payment arrangements
    • And a request for documents for you to send.
  4. Once received, the documents would be reviewed.
  5. A meeting would be held with you to get more details.
  6. A meeting would then be held with your child.
  7. Susan would talk with the teachers and others at the school.
  8. A list of recommendations would be provided to you.
  9. Susan would work with the school to determine a plan of services that would meet your child's needs.
Please note that the order of this process can be customized to individual time constraints and special situations.
